Information about our Teen Driver Education Courses:
Our VT Teen Driver Ed. Courses are 8 weeks long – containing a classroom phase and a driving phase. All classroom meetings will be done ONLINE through Zoom and our virtual learning platform NEO. The exceptions are for our very first meeting for the Mandatory Course Orientation and weekly driving lessons which will be held in-person and hosted on North Avenue in Burlington, VT. Students will begin driving lessons during the final 6 weeks of our 8 week course. Students are required to have a minimum of 5 hours driving practice with their family prior to starting their first driving lesson. Practicing basic vehicle operation (start engine, shift to appropriate gear, etc.) and initial driving skills (practice with smooth acceleration, smooth breaking, some experience with turning, etc.). Students will be expected to attend a minimum of 1 driving session per week for the final 6 weeks of the course. Driving lessons are 2 hours long, done in pairs with 1 hour behind the wheel driving instruction and 1 hour observing another driver.
The typical course schedule hosts live online classroom time every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30-8:30pm. Driving lessons are 1x/week either a week day slot from 4:00-6:00pm M-F or a weekend time slot Sat. or Sun. from 10am-12pm or 12pm-2pm. Additional coursework to be completed outside of scheduled classroom time as assigned.
The current DMV regulations require 30 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of in-car instruction with 6 hours of in-car observation in order to be qualified for taking the Road Test license exam with the DMV under the age of 18. This course satisfies those requirements with extra emphasis on life long safe and defensive driving skills. We use the Driver Risk Prevention textbook and curriculum as the base for our program integrated with additional and supplemental research based resources and guest speakers. Our course also features a special focus on impaired and distracted driving risk prevention for teens. Upon successful completion of this course, students will receive a certificate of completion and be one step closer to being ready to take their Road Test with the VTDMV. Please visit the VTDMV website for complete details on licensing requirements. Course Cost = $1050. Must register and pay in full to be reserved a spot in any upcoming course.
